It's TRUE! Medicine for the People finally made it to play the amazingly sweet, world class Red Rocks Amphitheater this summer!!! It was an incredible SOLD OUT show with String Cheese for 10,000 folks, with a powerful lineup with Max RIbner back on horn, Pato on bass, Justin on Drum kit, Chase on guitar, Nahko lead vocals and of course representing the feminine~ yours truly on hand drums/percussion! As the sun blazed in this sacred & ancient red rocks gathering place, our Medicine regined to the people as never before~ on Fire! Photo of Hope center stage during her powerful Djembe solo, as Nahko leaps and flies overhead!
Excited to release this new music video~ shot by Surviving Child Media, starring Jasmine Fuego~ in the forests and hills of San Francisco! This is a powerful collaboration of a team of artists and dancers front the bay area, that came out beautifully, with the raw energy intended for this song. Temple is a song based on traditional African lyrics; a song honoring, invoking and bringing together the feminine, the masculine, and the great spirit. This fusion combines those lyrics with a drum pattern of India & a sweet heavy dance groove! Enjoy~
Beginning a new series of paintings, this is an exciting time! Hope has created a little bit a of time to get out her easel and paints again after touring hard and now has some new ideas and techniques that are coming out fast and fabulous~ stay tuned!
Most of her work is acrylic paint on canvas~ though there are aspects of multi media in every piece to get the layers of sophisticated shading and detail.
Medicine for the People was invited to perform on the international Zen Cruise over the ocean to Haiti and Jamaica for a journey of yoga and music! It was especially mind blowing to hit the soil in Jamica and spend the afternoon at the home of an Ital crew ~ they had a medicinal plant garden and a thatched roof temple to the founder of rastafarianism, Hallie Selassie. We ate the ital food they prepared, and were invited to listen to the elders play at their Niabynge drum circle by the fire. We were grateful to be welcomed in, and witness their ceremony.
New Year's Eve brought Medicine for the People to the world renowned Woodford Folk Festival~ where we were epically received and given the opportunity to bring thousands of Oz friends & fans into the new year 2015 together!
Medicine was playing on the main stage up until Midnight, when we paused for everyone in the crowd to light their candles, and held 3 minutes of silence to pray for world peace~ this was spectacular to behold, before jumping back into the most energized version of 'I believe in the good things coming'!
Powerful new collaboration, 'I Return' just out!! A song featuring my spoken word lyrics~ supported by sweet beatz by DJ Inner Forest. This video, shot by Pavel Safonov features dancer Isabel Sanchez and bass player of the Ace of Cups, the all female band who opened for Jimmy Hendrix~ Denise Kaufman. The concept includes timelessness and the sense that we all return and evolve as beings.
In town on her Permaculture Action tour with the Polish Ambassador, Ayla Nereo and I made it into the studio together and she & friends collaborated on vocals on my new track, Journey Bound! It was an exciting fusion of drums, vocal percussion and and enchanting melodies~ look for it on my next Album!
Featured artist in article for the award winning Byron Bluesfest, the famous Australian Music festival, in the news~ this photo was taken while we were playing for 8,000 people at Byron BluesFest this spring in Australia!!
Collaborating alongside Pele and the ocean, I got busy this spring with a new friend and co-collaborator, DJ Inner Forest!
Together we have created my newest single, 'I Return' ~ A spoken word piece with a beat that's both acoustic and electronic, for a whole new sound!
This dramatic energy that arose when combining new tools and musical perspectives has brought about a whole new feeling to Hope's music~ It's currently in it's final stages, can't wait to share with you ~
hope you enjoy!!!
Here we GO! With a new drum kit player backing us up~ with an incredible start already, Medicine for the People is beginning a Summer tour that is jam packed with amazing festivals and gigs all across the United States and into Canada. check our tour schedule at nahko.com
On the sacred land of Benteley, outside Byron, Australia, there was a proposed fracking project for call seam gas mining. The locals were outraged, as it would infect their clean waters and damage their healthy land with chemicals and destruction, and so they stood their ground. There was a three month protest and camp out on the land, including a gathering at which Nahko and I participated, playing music for the protectors, and raising money and awareness~ and within a couple weeks~ the Mining was STOPPED!! This is the first powerful success of it's kind!
An amazing journey into the mountains and valleys of New Zealand brought me to the door step of percussionist Doug Brush (drummer for Dave Stringer) and we played drums amidst the sheep, at the local music college, and along the sea! This beautiful time of rejuvenation was an incredible opportunity to learn new poly pulse patterns and continue to grow as a percussionist & musician!
This Medicine show was an incredible affirmation for Hope as a drummer, and as a female drummer! Medicine for the People was one of the only bands invited to this prestigious event who is not technically a reggae band; so the outcome was in question... But the experience was incredible!! The crowd loved Medicine so much, they would not leave without an encore~ (the only band other than Damien Marley to be given an encore the entire weekend!!) Hope, as the only white female drummer, was delighted at this powerfully affirming response and acceptance into this roots community! Gratitude and respect~ all around!
Collaboration with the exceptional Visionary Art of Shawn Hocking
(shockingart.com) has lead to a powerful new music video~ 'Eclipse' which will be released on the Lunar Eclipse, on April 15th! Honoring the moon and its cycles, we filmed by moonlight on the Hawaiian islands with dancers~ Lena Moon & Robyn Chance (robynchance.com). The incredible video production included projecting the images in the dark onto the dancers dressed in white~ check out the results!
In Costa Rica, Hope attended a Soul Painting Workshop with visionary Artist, Autumn Skye! It was an amazing and empowering experience that resulted in the creation of this beautiful painting! After an entire week of new painting techniques, self exploration, and visual scrutiny; the most important aspects of strength and self came through in Hope's self portrait. Enjoy! It's merely a beginning of more of Hope's artwork to come in 2014~ keep an eye out for it!
Such an amazing class! Hope facilitated a beginners level hand drum class at the Sanctuary on Big Island, Hawaii. We had a great turn out, and everyone learned something new~ new rhythms, techniques and drum language! Such a beautiful community family in Hawaii~ so great to host another drum workshop, ALOHA STYLE again!!
Medicine is getting ready to go SOUTH! We have been invited to head to Costa Rica to meet up with some of our favorite other musicians to throw down some sweet beats in the jungle! I am excited to visit and get involved with the beauty and the people of the area... as well as sharing our music on this land which is ancient yet new to us! While I am there, I will personally be attending a week long art and painting workshop with Amanda Sage~ visionary artist and student of Alex and Allison Gray. We will be exploring techniques and creating soul portraits~ I am excited to see what emerges in this inspiring environment!
While in Byron Bay, eastern Australia, I had the opportunity to visit an incredible place ~ the traditional Aboriginal birthing pools. These are the Ti Tree lakes, surrounded by the Ti Tree forest which drips medicinal and antimicrobial ti tree oil into the lakes, making the lakes the perfect place for a healthy natural birth. The intelligence of the Aboriginal people of Australia is so very in touch with nature, and I have great respect for their healing ways of bringing in new life. When I visited, I was so inspired, I brought together a group of women to celebrate and document this amazing place in my new music video, "You Will", which I have since dedicated to the honoring and support of mothers.
This time between touring with the music has been very exciting and fruitful, back to the Art Studio!
~ Beginning a new body of art work! Exploring new styles and approaches combined with skills that Hope has practiced for years. Thus, this time, and these new paintings are ripe with colorful new concepts and unfolding beauty.
This dynamic time has led to creating a new series of paintings incorporating techniques including mono printing, pencil, acrylic paint, spray paint, hand cut stencils, and more.
Inspire Truth Music Festival produced by Beloved Presents~ It was such an incredible evening to share New Year's with so many talented artists- Rising Appalachia, Sasha Rose, Eskimo, & so many more! Medicine for the People played main stage at the midnight hour, and visionary artists, Alex and Alison Gray joined us for a powerful invocation to the earth and setting positive intentions for 2014!
Hope was invited to perform with an All Star cast at ALL GOOD Music Festival. She and Jay Lane (of PRIMUS) were the drum/percussion section. Joined by Vince Herman (of LEFTOVER SALMON), Robert Somerville, Tim Palmieri (of The BREAKFAST), Chris DeAngelis and Joel Cummins (of UMPHREE's McGEE). The project was all improv -bravely conducted by Matt Butler- and the performance was amazing!
